For my current tastes, a competitively priced, 1.5 pl hextone printer like the 1400 seems like a good deal for 100% carbon pigment printing. With Eboni-6, these 1.5 pl printers are about one Lab B unit warmer than the older 3+ pl units. On the other hand, the ability to print reasonably smooth 100% Eboni, however, allows much more neutral printing, bringing in the entire range of the 3-MK 1800 approach. I particularl like the un- brightened papers with Eboni black only. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800-No-OBA-Paper.pdf Being able to mix the characteristics of the dilute Eboni-6 approach - - http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800-No-OBA-Paper.pdf -- with the 3-MK/BO (via QTR) workflow makes for a more flexible inkset. The tonal range expands, the paper range expands, and we get control over the random "grain" or noise level, which can be useful.
