Richard...to simulate photo-silkscreen, I found multiple passes on the same paper to have maybe 1/8" registration variation (back when my 2200 was still new :-) ... you could do what you have in mind with a photoshop-created "black"/glop rectangle in a glop-only pass. However, based only on my machine I'd expect a 1/8" registration issue...irrelevant if you cover the edge of the glop with a matte... ...also, someone once suggested keeping a second 2100/2200 as a glop-only printer (maybe a 1270/80 would serve?) :-) ...also, the glop examples I've seen have sometimes had subtle pizza wheel issues, but the fix for that's evidently easy.
