Digital BW, The Print

My c86 has been sitting for several months (using dedicated MIS inks). The nozzles are 
clogged. I have done several cleanings and it has improved somewhat, but about half of the 
test pattern is missing. Is this printer history or is it worth it to have epson repair it?

Having said that, I was wanting to upgrade to a printer that I can make larger prints on. Is 
the 1400 a good "upgrade"? Will it yield a good digital b&w print? Do I need certain 
photoshop plugins?

Additionally, what can I do in the future to prevent these clogs.
