c86 & 1400 questions Need HELP

c86 & 1400 questions Need HELP

2008-11-24 by Steve

My c86 has been sitting for several months (using dedicated MIS inks). The nozzles are
clogged. I have done several cleanings and it has improved somewhat, but about half of the
test pattern is missing. Is this printer history or is it worth it to have epson repair it?

Having said that, I was wanting to upgrade to a printer that I can make larger prints on. Is
the 1400 a good "upgrade"? Will it yield a good digital b&w print? Do I need certain
photoshop plugins?

Additionally, what can I do in the future to prevent these clogs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use MIS EZ inks in a C88, and tried it yesterday after letting it sit
for about 6 months. It initially showed virtually no nozzles firing,
and a cleaning cycle didn't help. I used the Windex on a paper towel
trick (about 3 layers of paper towel folded/cut to the width and length
of the foam pad under where the head travels, soaked in Windex) and
after running the head over the wet towel a few times I let it sit for a
few minutes. After that, all nozzles were firing.

I'd sure try this (several times, if needed) before giving up on the
printer. As for Epson repair, I don't know if that's really an option
on these little printers. They're still available new for under $100
direct from Epson (last I looked) and I'd expect a repair to cost a
goodly percentage of that amount. If you were thinking about upgrading
the size anyway, though, it might not be worth even fiddling with
unclogging the heads.

Cheers,
Kip

I don't have a need (or the space) for a wide printer, so I haven't paid
much attention to the choices. I do see that there has been a lot
written recently about the 1400 on this forum, though, and I believe
there certainly are some who find it suitable.

I have the 1400 and run Eboni in the K position and distilled water
in the color positions.

I print exclusively B.O. with this printer and I think it is awesome.

I don't even think about it as printing with only K. It's a non-issue
for me.

Everyone I show the prints from this print to, who appreciate b&w
photography, love the prints.

Scott

I think it's my favorite platform also. I use the QTR sliders for a
50/50 blend of the Eb6-YK and BO. I just wish they made a 24" version
of it.

Paul,

Can you recommend what would be the best Epson 24" printer to use MIS Eboni
in? Are current or newer models better or can only older models be used with
this ink?

Thanks,

Where can I find more information about using Eboni, Eb6-Yk and
distilled water with a 1400? Paul, I looked on your site but must
have missed it.

I'm sure the new ones are an improvement, and the service bureau guys
on this forum and the wide format forum know a lot more about them than
I do. For my B&W needs, I doubt the improvments are all that
significant. The drop size has not changed significantly since the
7600. For B&W, we don't need the extra inks, and for an individual
photographer the speed increases are probably not that important.

I'm still using an old 7500. That old non-variable, relatively large
droplet printer does quite a good job with Eboni-6. But it really
shows the dots with the Y-K only approach that I'd now rather use. I
actually do have a 22x28 Y-K only print that I'm going to frame and put
in the gallery just to see if anyone notices, but I can't really
recommend the old 7500-7000 for the Y-K approach.

If I needed to buy a 24" printer today, I'd probably go for a good 7600
if I could find one. Then I would use the Eb6 4Y3K setup, but I'd only
print 16x20 and up with it. I've put some information about my 2200
tests of the approach at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/K2-Eb6-
4Y3K.pdf

Paul
www.PaulRoark.com

What'll really get my attention is a 1.5 pl 24" printer.

I have not written the 1400 YK option up as a separate approach at
this point. I do have some profiles in
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/1400-Profiles.zip
for those with Eboni-6 in their 1400s. They can then see what the YK
alone and with a 50/50 blend of black only looks like.

I'd probably not use water in the other positions. I like the idea
of 3Y3K or 4Y2K just to avoid having to re-fill the carts all the
time -- particularly the Y cart. A 2 bottle CIS would be a nice
addition to this type of setup. I just converted my old 2200
SuperJet CIS to this for the 2200 -- cut the ribbon, drill holes in
MIS bottles, and insert the tubes (with some wire holding them
together in the bottle). It's easy (if a bit messy with a used CIS).

For most people the Eboni-6 as written up is probably the way to
start. But I'm probably going to conver to a YK combo -- just don't
need the other inks in 1.5 pl printers.

What about the Epson 3800? I´ve never read much here about this model.
Is it not compatible with the MIS inks? In other Newsgroups some
owners of this model are very much convinced of the print quality.
What do you think Paul?

I think it's an attractive package for those doing color who want to be
able to print 16x20s. That's quite a large group of poeple. It also
has the ABW option, and with QTR one can cut the color down quite a bit.

But, it's not capable of the 24" paper I like, and it is not a 1.5
picoliter droplet printer that can make a photo quality black only
print.

I'm not sure if MIS supports the printer, but I doubt they have any B&W
inksets for it.

Paul,
Do you have any numbers or info for the differnce in color ink used
for ABW vs. QTR. I use both ...

Has anyone measured the Dmax for these?

Thanks!

I don't have any way to quantify how much more color ABW uses over QTR,
but a quick look at a scan of an "neutral" ABW test print scan on page
1 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800-Lightfastness.pdf indicates
that Epson uses yellow as well as the cyan and magenta. This high
gamut yellow warms up the print significantly, and this additional
warmth over the naturally somewhat warm carbon requires that much more
C & M to cool it down.

Paul,

Can you tell me if the Epson 7800/7880 would be interchangeable with the
profiles, MIS inks and cartridges of the 7600? I see 7600 listed on the MIS

I'm quite sure it would not be. Be sure you can get carts and a chip
resetter for a printer before you buy one.

See http://www.inksupply.com/wideformat.cfm and plug in the printer
model.

Good luck with the printer search.

Paul,

I have heard that couch story before and I though the idea of disguising it

The problem with wide-format printers is I can't hide them in the attic
cubbyholes like I do with most of the things I buy, as if they were
Christmas presents.

You will get the same functionality for printer profiling from either;
since the S3Print software can be used for free with the PFP spectro.
The difference will be the S2Pro software and hardware versus the
S3Elite versions, which offer some excellent improvements in both.

You will get the same functionality for printer profiling from either;
since the S3Print software can be used for free with the PFP spectro.
The difference will be the S2Pro software and hardware versus the
S3Elite versions, which offer some excellent improvements in both.

RE: [Digital BW] Spyder3 Studio or PrintFix Pro 2 ?

2008-12-07 by Aaron Good

I’ve been a longtime lurker – back to an Epson C84 / CIS from MIS.

I’ve ordered the same Spyder3 Studio after a disastrous run with the Colormunki Photo and hoping to get it soon.

I posted my experience as part of a thread at Luminous Landscape.
