I'm currently demoing the software and will definitely purchase it. 
While not as broadly capable as PS, PSP does have significant 16 bit 
capabilities, inc., Adjustment Layers with Channel Mixer and Curves, 
and more. It takes PS plug-ins and ICC profiles. 

It's definitely worth exploring it for free.
