This is the 21-Step I use most of the time:

Read Tom Moore's tutorial that ships with QTR. To make profiles for
the rip, first print a Calibration Mode print at 100%. (Tools >
Options > Calibration Mode) That prints out 21-step test files for
all the inks. This gives you information about what the ink limits
are for the inks.

For example, use the spectro to see what the darkest black patch is.

The dilute inks will often not hit peak density until 100%, but look
at them with a magnifying hood and you'll often see that they start
getting rough quite a bit below that. Set their limits such that
they are smooth. The short cut is to just use the K limit as the
default and leave all else blank. I now often set the K limit at 10
below the actual deepest black and put the actual K limit in the
Black Boost, which puts a very sharp slope at the end of the K
curve. Given how flat the response curve is there, it works well.

A second Calibration print is done at the K ink limit. This is used
to compare dilute ink densities to K. K = 100, the others are the K
% that equals the darkest patch of the dilute inks. The lightest ink
may be close to 2% if you're using a K6 or K7. You might have to
interpolate between the K patches to get the number.

When you use the spectro, you "measure" and in that box "export" to
the named file.

I have a shortcut on my desktop that takes me to
"C:\Program Files\ColorVision\PrintFIX PRO\Data\Export"
which is where my version stores the text files with the Lab
information.

This saves a lot of time.

I open the PFP text files with Excel and "graph" them (highlight
column, click on Insert > Chart > Line.
