Thanks Ernst - I can see that with any toning the effect would likely be even worse. If I had a printer here to use, I'd certainly want to experiment quite a bit to find more optimal B/W solutions. it's not so bad with some of the HP supplied 'presets' but adding extra papers needs a bit of work, although I didn't get to try the APS (not sure if this would be of any relevance for B/W) Keith
