Change your AV schedule to manual (but, remember to do so.)
Turn off the indexing, at least on the external.
Also, Photoshop scratch on a USB drive is REALLY slowing you 
down--partition or not.

Contrary to logic, my computer slows down when I have an external 750GB 
archived images hard drive switched on. (The disc also has a scratch 
partition for Photoshop. I use a laptop - but otherwise, funds 
permitting, would have a RAID scratch array.)

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
