Hi Paul, They must have a chip as they communicate with the printer for a variety of reasons (ink level, etc.). However, I don't remember seeing the chip hanging out on the side of a cartridge. There are shaped "plugs" on the bottom of each cartridge that ensure the right cartridge is put into the right slot. The chip/communication system must be inside the plastic plug somehow. I have not looked at this all that carefully. I will check it out this weekend and let you know what I find.
