I've been offered one of these but know nothing about it. My interest might be to see if it is suitable for B&W with modified or non-Canon inks. Does anyone have any experience with them and know whether there are refillable carts? Thanks, Paul www.PaulRoark.com

I have one sitting here taking up space, but I've never tried putting anything other than standard Canon carts into it. C. Paul, I have had a Canon IPF5100 for two years. It is a great printer. For B&W-only printing, I use Joe Berndt's TrueBW RIP which has a great interface for individual ink channel control and profiling. I have used both QTR and TrueBW and find TrueBW to have a far superior interface; unfortunately, it only works with Canon IPF printers. I get great "3BW ink" prints with this machine and TrueBW. The cartridges do not appear to be "user" refillable. I am not sure that you could engineer a system of all Black/Grey inks without Canon's cooperation. My ideal B&W printer would be a Canon IPF with TrueBW and Cone "K10" inks as the printer has 12 channels. George

Hi Paul, They must have a chip as they communicate with the printer for a variety of reasons (ink level, etc.). However, I don't remember seeing the chip hanging out on the side of a cartridge. There are shaped "plugs" on the bottom of each cartridge that ensure the right cartridge is put into the right slot. The chip/communication system must be inside the plastic plug somehow. I have not looked at this all that carefully. I will check it out this weekend and let you know what I find. George

Have been refilling cart's for about two decades, have not found an Epson or Canon cart which is not refillable yet. Sometimes the place to refill them is covered by a label strip. Other times Ive had to "drill" a hole to refill them. Many refill kits come with a small hand held drill bit to make the hole with, and a rubber plug to fill it with while being used. Another thing Ive learned which may be on here or not, is in many cartridges they are not empty, when the printer says they are empty. There is a small hole about big enough to fit a paper clip into, pressing a clip in it, resets the cartridge so you can print a lot more with it. But if the IPF 5000 carts have a chip, it would presumably need to be reset or some software would have to be able to reset the counter. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Hi Paul, I don't think that the chips can be reset (yet), but according to the discussion in this thread about 3rd party inks in the 5000, all you need to do is disable ink level monitoring at the printer. http://canonipf.wikispaces.com/message/view/FAQ/16592985 I've been using a Canon iPF6100 for over a year now and have used only the Canon Lucia inks for both color and B&W printing. Really excellent results using just the Canon driver with custom icc RGB profiles. The Canon iPF printers are extremely frugal with ink use compared to my Epson printers so I don't mind the higher price for OEM inks. Bets regards, Carl PS - I still use my Epson 1800 for small B&W prints and notecards using the 3MK and PKN profiles. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "pr_roark" <paul.roark@...> wrote:

My current everyday printer, a IP4500 has a chip on the front. I assume that the IPF 5000 is the same in that regard. When the cartridge is empty, the chip must be reset by a specialized machine before it will work again. I do not know what the effect would be if the Low Ink warning comes on. Whether re-filling it will reset the warning, but even if not, it would still be usable. Iric --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "George Pappas" <george@...> wrote:

Hi Paul, I took a close look at the cartridges tonight. There does not appear to be an easy-to-access chip on it. There does seem to be some kind of chip that is embedded in the plastic shield and notch arrangement which ensure correct cartridge placement.. George C. Pappas george@... (703) 268-3196 _____

I just received a note from MIS that indicated they may be able to get auto-reset chips for the Canon in about a week. We'll see what they come up with. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

George and Paul, I was at FESPA in Amsterdam this year, and there where two or three manufacturer, showing both refill carts and chip resetters for the full iPF line of printers. One option was also to replace the chips after refill. I think MIS will come up with a solutuion ;-) Anders --- On Tue, 11/17/09, pr_roark <paul.roark@...> wrote:
