I also have an Epson 1400 and have used MIS UT-14 in the past. I would think
this would be a good place to start working on B&W. I am currently using the
HP Z3100 PK ink and it is producing very good results but it is more work to
get it going than just using the out of the bottle UT-14. Also the 1400
cartridges run out of ink very fast so be sure to get refillable ones and
ink in bottles.

Hi

I'm currently using a HP B9180 but have not been too happy with the B&W
printing on gloss/semi gloss paper.

I've looked at many posts on this forum over the past few days and spent
quite some time on Paul Roark's website. I've read a lot of good information
and advice and hopefully have absorbed some of it. (There are many areas
where I'm confused but hoping things will become clearer as I get hands on
experience)
