Epson 1400 & Inks

Epson 1400 & Inks

2009-11-27 by badger346

Hi

I'm currently using a HP B9180 but have not been too happy with the B&W printing on gloss/semi gloss paper.

I've looked at many posts on this forum over the past few days and spent quite some time on Paul Roark's website. I've read a lot of good information and advice and hopefully have absorbed some of it. (There are many areas where I'm confused but hoping things will become clearer as I get hands on experience)

I've just ordered an Epson 1400 printer from Comet (UK) currently £10 off plus 5% discount (code '5PRINT').

My next stage is to order ink, cartridges and syringes. I've looked at the MIS inks and am thinking of the UT-14 ink bottles and purchasing empty cartriges & syringes from the same site.

I've also read on Paul Roark's site about the HP Z3100 Vivera PK ink(which I understand is probably the same ink as in my B9180). Would using this ink be a better option than using the UT-14 inkset or as a newbie to this area more likely to cause me a big headache?

Jon

Jon,

I also have an Epson 1400 and have used MIS UT-14 in the past. I would think
this would be a good place to start working on B&W. I am currently using the
HP Z3100 PK ink and it is producing very good results but it is more work to
get it going than just using the out of the bottle UT-14. Also the 1400
cartridges run out of ink very fast so be sure to get refillable ones and
ink in bottles.

Gary

Thanks for the advice I've ordered the UT-14 inks from MIS. I can see a long learning curve ahead of me.

Jon
I'm sitting here, printing a series of photos in a 1400 with UT14, using QTRip. All I had to tweek was a curve in PS before sending to QTR to make the midtones right, that I saved as an action.
Printing beautifuly...it`s a wonderful system...

My Epson 1400 has now been delivered. Just awaiting the MIS UT-14 inks and cartidges. What I didn't order is a 'Bottom Fill Adapter'. I have just read on the MIS site that after filling you pull some ink out from the outlet to avoid trapped air (I appreciate that I should have read the filling instructions before placing my order). I have filled cartridges on my HP B9180 previously without doing this step and have not had any air blockage problems. If I fill the MIS cartridge slowly is there a good chance of avoiding air blockage problems or are these cartridges prone to this problem?

Thanks

Jon
