7800 Eboni + HP setup

2010-01-06 by pr_roark

I've refilled my 7800 with a new inkset setup that combines Eboni and HP-PK, and dilutions of both. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/7800-EbHP.pdf

Basically, because the initial Eboni setup was stable in the tubing, I could drop the redundant densities of the original setup. Five Eboni positions are all I need for that ink. Since the HP Z3100 neutral inks have done so well in the Wilhelm and Aardenburg fade testing, (see as well as my centrifuge testing, the HP PK and dilutions equal to LK and LLK have been installed along with the 5 Eboni positions. This is basically K3 printer equivalent to the Eboni6-HPPK setup I've had in my 1400 for over a year. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eb1400.pdf

The result, of course, is that I now have a variable-tone, between Eboni carbon warm and the HP PK neutral-cool for matte paper, and I can print neutral-cool on glossy paper.

The inkset arrangement prints with a ramp similar to Gray Gamma 2.2 with the Epson driver set to Color Controls gamma 1.8.

Among other things, what I'll probably do is switch to Alise Natural ("Museum") with a 50-50 blend of Eboni and HP where I need a more neutral print than the 100% carbon on Arches. With a 50-50 blend, the Lab B for Alise N rises only about 1.5 units from it's 0.5 starting point.

While I'm compromising my 100% carbon goal, using the HP blended inks is much less of a compromise than using paper with OBAs to get a more neutral tone.
