7800 Eboni + HP setup

7800 Eboni + HP setup

2010-01-06 by pr_roark

I've refilled my 7800 with a new inkset setup that combines Eboni and HP-PK, and dilutions of both. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/7800-EbHP.pdf

Basically, because the initial Eboni setup was stable in the tubing, I could drop the redundant densities of the original setup. Five Eboni positions are all I need for that ink. Since the HP Z3100 neutral inks have done so well in the Wilhelm and Aardenburg fade testing, (see as well as my centrifuge testing, the HP PK and dilutions equal to LK and LLK have been installed along with the 5 Eboni positions. This is basically K3 printer equivalent to the Eboni6-HPPK setup I've had in my 1400 for over a year. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eb1400.pdf

The result, of course, is that I now have a variable-tone, between Eboni carbon warm and the HP PK neutral-cool for matte paper, and I can print neutral-cool on glossy paper.

The inkset arrangement prints with a ramp similar to Gray Gamma 2.2 with the Epson driver set to Color Controls gamma 1.8.

Among other things, what I'll probably do is switch to Alise Natural ("Museum") with a 50-50 blend of Eboni and HP where I need a more neutral print than the 100% carbon on Arches. With a 50-50 blend, the Lab B for Alise N rises only about 1.5 units from it's 0.5 starting point.

While I'm compromising my 100% carbon goal, using the HP blended inks is much less of a compromise than using paper with OBAs to get a more neutral tone.

I may get to that experiment today. A very light dilute Eboni might not rub off significantly. In the past, I've used MIS LK as the warm toner for HP PK. Since the problem with HP PK is a usually in the shadows, the LK density was enough. As a practical matter with the 7800, the only time I'd print a serious large glossy I'd also spray it with Print Shield. The spray is needed to control bronzing as well as the Eb-6 rub off. So, I do expect to have some tone control with glossy printing, but if warmer glossies were a target, I'd have gone with the MIS LK, LLK inks instead of dilute Eboni. (Note that if the C6 generic base is used to dilute MIS PK, it is not longer glossy. Also, if MIS Glop is used to dilute HP PK, it has less bronzing.)

With this new setup, I've found for each paper I like to make 2 profiles with QTR. One is with the 100% Eboni inks, and the other is with the HP-PK inks used as the midtones, making a neutral-cool profile. Then when I print I can use the sliders to blend the tones as needed, including split tones or even ones.

The linked graph shows the tones of Arches BW with a 50-50 blend of Eboni and HPPK: http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Arches-EbHP-tones.jpg

It makes a very neutral image on a somewhat creamy paper.

By the way, I might add that this un-coated paper rarely as the flaking issues of the coated ones. It also spots very easily, being made for watercoloring. I tend to use a lighter shade of the ink with either a very small brush of round toothpick.
