Digital BW, The Print

Hi, everyone--I'm a newcomer to this list--and to digital photography. For nearly half a century I have done b&w printing with a pair of Beseler 45ms. Now, I'm trying to make the transition to digital printing and am exploring my (affordable) options. I have seen a number of good reports on the Epson stylus 1400. Would any of you care to comment or make recommendations?
I'm somewhat erratic in my corrEspondence (in fact, something of a Luddite) but I look forward to participating in and learning from this group.
