economical black only photo printer

2010-01-28 by Michael

Hi, everyone--I'm a newcomer to this list--and to digital photography. For nearly half a century I have done b&w printing with a pair of Beseler 45ms. Now, I'm trying to make the transition to digital printing and am exploring my (affordable) options. I have seen a number of good reports on the Epson stylus 1400. Would any of you care to comment or make recommendations?
I'm somewhat erratic in my corrEspondence (in fact, something of a Luddite) but I look forward to participating in and learning from this group.
Thank you very much.

Epson 2880 with Advanced Black & White feature. If you can afford the initial cost, go with the Epson 3880the amount of ink you get will more than make up for the difference in cost between the two printers and give you a lot better features.

Hi Michael,

I just hooked myself up with a 1400 with the MIS Eboni ink set. Loving the
results. Been doing this for years, previously with an Epson 2200 using MIS
and Epson inks but printing black-only, before that an 870 and before that
an 1160 using Cone inks. This 1400 with the eboni set is the best yet (a
little warm but that's the carbon inks).

And best of all I live in Albany, next town over from you. Happy to meet up
and share prints if you'd like. Let me know.

Yes, great stuff. the dmax is amazing. I did see a couple of pinhole
flakes but in all honesty I did not carefully care for the first few prints
I've made, sort of shuffling the papers around and such....a little warm,
but I like that.
