This response is totally "Un-scientific", just my experience. A couple of years ago I did a firmware update and a driver update to my printer. At that point I had lost all of my paper preferences, including some of the Epson & my own ICC profiles. I kept the Firmware update, which is still Version 101564, but I went back to my previous installed driver which was Version 5.30. I also have the latest Paper Feed Utility, but all paper adjustments are made in the Epson driver with no problems. So my advice is to stay with the driver at works/worked best and update everything else.

With that said, I'm on an XP SP3 machine. Now the new driver I was going to install was to accommodate Vista, and the latest seems to be for Windows 7. I'm pretty sure the same is true on the Mac side where new drivers are to accommodate Snow Leopard. If you need the new driver because of an OS X upgrade, you should check out the Yahoo Epson 4000 forum, http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Epson4000/. Really good info & help there.
