Rather than use all the inks, you print with only the one black ink.  Many of the older Epson printers have that option in the normal Epson driver.  However, most of the newer Epson drivers do not have an option to print with black ink only.  However, QuadToneRip -- see http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html -- supports the 1400 and allows one to print with only the black ink or any combination of inks you might like.

I'm not sure what inkset you're using, but the MIS inksets like the UT14 are very good.  However, pigments on glossy paper have always had their problems.  They -- the pigments -- tend to just sit on top of the paper and have artifacts like bronzing that detract from  the image.

My experience with the recent printers and MIS chips (auto reset) is that if the printer has a mix of MIS and Epson chips in it, the printer will not run.  All the chips must be either MIS or Epson.  I was hoping someone would identify a source of third party chips there were, in fact, compatible with the Epson chips so that we could use the Epson Claria K with other, non-Epson carts in the other positions.
