How to best use my printer?

How to best use my printer?

2010-06-13 by jorge

Hello, my first post.

I'm an amateur photographer, and for a few decades I processed my own B&W photos - Opemus enlarger and Pentax cameras.

A few yrs back I moved to smaller quarters and had to store my lab.

I've purchased a few digital cameras form simple PS to a Canon S5 IS and recently found out, through the article below, that I could print digital B&W:

http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn3.htm

My printer is an Epson Office T33, but trying a few SW options I've found out that a combination of GIMP and Gutenprint I could print quite acceptable photos.

I became so happy that I purchased a Nikon D90 to go back to my B&W days!

I would appreciate any clues that could help me to improve the print quality - even some other printer.

Note: I live in Brazil so I's not easy to get MIS inksets or some special papers.

Thanks for your help,

Jorge,

If MIS does not ship to Brazil, check out http://www.image-specialists.com/about_us_global_dis.aspx#usa

If you can get the matte black, top notch printing on matte paper is easy to do with virtually any Epson printer and a CIS.
See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink-Mixing.pdf

My general ink information page is at
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/

MIS B&W inksets are listed by printer and inkset at
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Inkset-list.html

It is, of course, always easier to start with an inkset that is supported by a pre-made profiles for the specific printer. But with QuadToneRip (QTR), making profiles is rather easy.

Good luck with your B&W.

Jorge.
I'm in Brazil too, and I've been printing this way for many years, with the help of Paul and others in this list. Yes,it's not easy to get things going here,we have to import it all. But MIS ships to Brazil with no hassles, and to import a printer (I use an Epson 1400 which is excellent for BW purposes, with UT14 MIS inks) you can bring it through www.boxbrazil.com for a very good final price.
Best,
André
