Somerset Museum Rag 300

Somerset Museum Rag 300

2010-09-23 by tboleyyh

I've seen some positive posts about this new paper on some other forums so got some sheets to test. It's texture is somewhat between Photo Rag and German Etching, very natural but unobtrusive, and it's pretty neutral- L A B = 99.18 0.46 -0.64

The Dmax with the Piezotone setups I use was better than other Moab offerings, but not as good as some of the best papers available, at 1.62.
With Epson/9800 ink it hovers around 1.6, depending on driver or RIP setups.
While that's not real high, it certainly far from "weak", and visually nice.
Color gamut was in line with other premium papers, with a comparative fall off in the darkest colors, but still good.
The coating seems improved over past Somerset inkjet papers in that I see no mottling or problems with ink load.
Visually, both color and B&W prints were appealing. Unlike the new Epson papers, the coating does not cool off the carbon inks in an unappealing manner.
Frankly i don't think it will take the place of other papers used here, but it's quite nice and I thought I'd post my experience in case others were considering giving it a try.
Some cost comparisons should be done, the appeal of other Moab offerings is very good, but not premium/expensive, performance at excellent prices.

Thanks for the update Tyler. Doesn't look like it will be better than the Canson papers I like.

I think my tone was a little off, with an unintended disparaging hint. Obviously, as you know, Canson's prices are as premium as their performance...
Somerset Museum Rag is a really nice paper, and might be a much more viable option than the more expensive papers for many people, with very little visual compromise. It also has a nice surface not quite like anything else. I've always like Somerset's surfaces...

Understood. FYI, Shades Of Paper charges $173.25 for Rag Photographique 24" x 50' and Moab lists Museum Rag for $199.98 for 24" x 50' so as far as cost goes, they're the same. Do you have a more reasonable source?

Thanks!

Jim

Jim,

On the topic of Canson papers, something I am trying at the moment, which have
you found to be the most interesting? So far I purchased the Canson sample pack
for closer examination and ordered the 10 sheet packs of BFK Rives & Arches
Velin Museum. I intend on comparing them to the Harmon Matt FB paper which
contains OBAs but is a beautiful white paper.

Phil
