Roll Paper

Roll Paper

2003-03-26 by Stan

I'm working on some large panorama prints that when completed will
be 4 feet in length. I have an Epson 3000 printer and would like to
print on William Turner or Photo Rag but the only rolls I've seen
are at least 22" in width - much too wide for the printer. Does
anyone know a source where I can get rolls that are 17" in width?

Thanks,

Stan

Hi Stan;

Never heard of such a size-I think thes you can do especially if you
want the Hannemuhle papaers, is see if Inkjetgoodies or another
dealer can cut a 24" roll for you. That'll leave you with a 7" strip
for testing, so it wouldn't be a total waste

Try www.digitalartsupply.com. They may be willing to cut 17" rolls for you.
Otherwise you could buy 24" rolls and find a friend with a band or chop saw
and cut your own. Just put a protector sheet of paper around the roll and
get a sharp fine tooth blade.

Roll Paper

Hello,
Does anyone precut roll paper prior to printing? I was thinking it might help reduce waste.
Thanks,
Gary Wagner

I do it regularly. Particularly when printing panoramic images. It many
cases it also saves money. I do use a d-roller though, which isn't cheap, but
does work well.

Hi Marty-
I have a question..I have a roll of 17 inch wide paper and my printer (Epson
2200) will only accommodate a 13inch wide paper.
Do you actually cut the roll to 13" and if so how, and what tools do you use?
thanks for the info
Bonnie

I've heard of people sawing rolls. I've no experience myself. I would be interested in experiences though. Actually, I'm pondering to purchase a DIY machine saw, partially for this purpose. Anyone experience?

Re: [Digital BW] Re:Roll Paper

A 12"compound slide mitre saw may help but depending on the diameter of
the paper roll. 100ft paper roll is hard to deal with but 40ft may be
possible. Need to choose the right (finer) saw blade too.

Matte paper is easier to cut than glossy paper. Plastic paper like
inkjet white film is hard to cut using a saw but easy to cut using a knife.

Marty,

I was thinking about cutting the whole roll in sheets and storing in a box
until ready to print. Are you doing this or cutting only as you need it and
using the d-roller prior to printing?

Thanks,

[Digital BW] Re:Roll Paper

2010-09-30 by ElEstudio

Hello,

I use a table saw (12" diameter) with matte papers and it works like a charm, but your blade has to be in perfect conditions. Plasticky materials can stick/melt unless you go very (VERY) slowly and patiently and yet, I wouldn't exactly recommend it unless you have no other choice.
As someone else said, plastics are better with a big sharp knife or cutter.
And yes, when you cut paper from rolls to whatever size, I certainly would recommend that you deroll it before printing unless you want your printers' head damaged.
Hope it helps!

I do this all the time for my 7600. Whether you need a roller to flatten it depends on the paper. Entrada seems to do well just by sitting flat for a while, Red River Aurora wouldn't flatten for the life of me, HPR was somewhere in between. But even if it's still curled you can print on it without problems as long as you insert it in the direction of the curl (so that the head travels across a flat surface) otherwise you may get ink drips.

[Digital BW] Re:Roll Paper

2010-09-30 by dlruckus

Like others here, I use a miter saw to do this.First I wrap and tape butcher paper tightly around the area of the roll I intend to cut. I also use a carbide tipped fine tooth blade. It works very well.
You can, with caution, even use a 10 inch blade and rotate the roll to cut all the way through longer rolls.
It does make a mess however, as the fine paper dust makes your work area look as if you had an indoor snow storm, so beware of where you do the cutting.

Regards,
Duane
