Advanced B&W - Another possible source of ink

Advanced B&W - Another possible source of ink

2010-12-18 by firewoodtech

Epson Indonesia have started selling the world's first original bulk
ink,
$5.50 per 70ml bottle/color.

It is dye ink maybe Claria? I think it is another good source of
original Epson
black ink for the Advanced Dye B&W.

Very interesting. Maybe Epson really is deciding it can't control the market, so it might as well participate as a competitor. The ease of tapping into the Noritsu carts may have been well recognized by Epson way before I noticed the opportunity.

We'll see if they sell this printer in the U.S.

Also, they are being very quiet about whether the ink is Claria or old 1280 style dye, although I can't imagine any company wanting anything to do with old style dyes.

I'd guess that the "alliance" (Fujifilm, Epson, & Noritsu) is simply entering the high volume market and has decided they have the capacity and low enough costs to take a huge chunk of it with their advanced dye technology and still make very good returns.

I think this is probably good news for those of us who want the advanced dyes to be readily available. I doubt the "alliance" will bother us if they're entering the market at this "CIS" level.

Indonesian market only it seems. Not that different to the Epson B500DN
B300 models but the last use big carts 180/100 ml instead of a CIS. I
mentioned them 2 years ago and the chips on the carts are cracked for
some time already. 4pL droplets, inks most likely Durabrite pigment. Not
the ideal droplet size for quad inks. But with dual sided printing. The
L100 ink bottles come with a code number. I don't think Epson gets soft
these days, Xmas doesn't change that.

Based on draw-downs on EEM, Noritsu "LK" (equal Lab L to standard LK) is 18% Noritsu K. The LLK is 30% of the LK. Epson K3 7800 ink was used for this calibration.

Advanced B&W - Variable Tone Noritsu Option

2010-12-20 by Paul

I've used an old Epson R220 -- a good old workhorse that has proved to be a reliable test bed -- to make a demonstration Noritsu variable-tone inkset. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/N-BW-VT-1-220.pdf

I think my results strongly suggest that a similar setup would work well in most Epson printers.

I used the Epson driver because it's the least flexible. QTR could obviously be used and achieve even better results, such has higher black densities. (Shoot, just can't hit much more than 1.9 with the Epson drive and H. Photo Rag; QTR hits a bit over 2.0.)

The variable tone approach should allow almost all papers to be printed, though matte dmax is not that impressive on many papers. HPR does best, Red River Premium Matte is next, with the best native tones. Red River Premium Matte is the easy, best value matte paper here.

I just did a single axis model -- Lab A (magenta) variability. This takes care of the most obvious tonal deficiencies of the Noritsu K. For the glossy papers I've tested so far, I don't think more is warranted. I will not bother with a more complex system for the 220.

Note, however, that a full 3D model is probably able to be supported by this approach by adding Noritsu yellow or a blend containing it in the yellow position.

There are some good reasons these materials are, in the "dry labs," starting to take a huge chunk of the commercial printing market. There is no reason we B&W printers should be left out. It'll be interesting to see if Epson makes a full k3 Claria printer. It could be quite a machine. (In the meantime, I'll go there with materials and printers we can all get -- now.)

Re: Advanced B&W - Noritsu LM

2010-12-21 by Paul

The blend of base + Noritsu Magenta that most closely matches the sample of Epson Claria LM is: 32% Noritsu M + 68% clear base.

This was arrived at using draw-downs on EEM/UPPM.

The 32% seems odd to me. Usually one sees 30% or 33%. The sample of Claria is a bit old and out of a half used cart. I'm guessing if one does not have a scales, a 1:2 (33.3%) mix would be close enough.
