Brian,

What do you mean?

You say a "fifth in color." Does that mean a "fifth ink color?"

I have all the copies of BW magazine. Point me to a specific page and image and I will give an opinion.

This is a bit obscure but I have been looking at the images in B+W magazine and noticed that they are using a 5th in color that appears to be a true silver shiny ink. The images have a certain luminence that I would like to reproduce in my digital printing. Is there a way (custom MIS sets?) to get this same look? My experience with Piezo inks to date has been good but they are more brown than cool in tone and certainly not silver.

  Thanks!

  Brian

Steadman -

Yes - I believe it is a fifth ink color. Actually, a more correct term would be that it is probably a quadratone process with a fourth color being the metallic silver ink. All of the ads have it and most of the images in the magazine. Hold one up the the light and you'll see the reflection. I don't have a copy here but if you don't see it, I'll get one and report back. The inside cover is often the most obvious if I remember correctly.

Thanks!

Re: "silver" prints from digital systems?-silver ink?

2001-08-20 by Antonis Ricos

Brian,

I have had offset prints done with a silver ink as a fifth, so I know what you
mean. However, I doubt that anything like that is in the future of inksets for
inkjets. The silver inks depend on actual metalic particles that would probably
clog the print heads instantly. Sounds like a silkscreen job to me, if you must
have them on a limited edition fine-art print.

To the group.

I have just received my first pack of the Legion Photo Matte Paper from Digital Arts., and also 3 from media street.

This paper is NOT as thick as the samples they sent out in their sampler (legion paper co.). The actual boxes of paper are about the same thickness as Epson's Archival Matte.

This is very disappointing, in fact it might be illegal labeling. I can easily pick out the heavier sampler paper with my eyes closed. The difference is not huge, but it is obvious. On the label on back of the sampler it says 230 gsms.

On the boxes of legion paper, it also says 230 gsms. but it isn't quite as thick as the sampler.

If anyone else got the sampler pack first, and then the actual paper, can you confirm, please?

Red River paper makes a "metallic" silver coated paper. Why not buy some and try printing your black ink over that? Of course metallic papers are notoriously hard to print on...and then Piezo inks don't like gloss papers...and it may not "stick"....and it is not archival paper....

But hey, it could be the very image that makes your portfolio stand out and sing! Call Red River and ask them for printing tips.

The Media street paper was the same thickness as digital art supplies. NOT as thick as the sampler pack sent out from Legion paper.

Jerry,

Mine should be in any day now. It was shipped from Media Street last week. I am interested to see what it looks like.
