ICC Profiles and QTR Rip Curves

ICC Profiles and QTR Rip Curves

2011-03-30 by RodB

Prior to the purchase of an Epson 1400, I printed on a Epson C86 with the MIS B&W innkset. Life was simple. The Epson 1400 and Quadtone Rip have introduced another level of complexity to the equation.

The QTR profiles (curves) provided with QTR Rip have a "BO" designation, such as "Epson-Matt-HW-BO". I assume "BO" means black only. Is this profile for printing B&W prints with the standard Claria color inkset supplied with the printer or for a B&W inkset, such as Inksupply's UT-14.

Paul Roark provides ICC profiles for the Epson 1400 printer. I assume these profiles are for the UT-14 B&W inkset and specific papers.

Can anyone clarify the meaning of "BO" and whether Roark's ICC Epson 1400 profiles are for the UT-14 inkset?

Thank You.

Rod

Looking at the qidf files for the 1400-mis printer supplied with QTR 2.7
they do indeed seem to be black only
The 1400-cl printer files are also black only, and clearly for the
Claria inkset.
The comments in the files also indicate that they are for other models
than the 1400, but they may be 'equivalent' for QTR, or just
incompletely editted.

(And thus the 1100 EZ setup to try to update and take that to 13" printers.)

I try to facilitate a learning curve with an inkset approach that allows, first, a reasonable print with the Epson driver and not much else (the EZ approach). The next step that often results in an excellent print is the use of an ICC (made with QTR's Create ICC-RGB) with the Epson driver. The ultimate in control is QTR -- the rip end of it. Black Only ("BO") is the simplest form of this to learn. So, hopefully there is a gradual learning curve here.

Correct. And I apologize for my often cryptic and un-explained abbreviations.

The names of the profiles should always start with (1) if ICCs, the printer model, then the inkset ..., (2) if in a QTR folder like "1400-mis" the inkset will be first. (The QTR folder already has the printer model info.)

There are some BO profiles in the 1400-mis folder that just start with "MK." Since it's black only, as long as the ink in the K position is an MK, they ought to work.

Hopefully there will be an inkset designation somewhere.

They should have inkset (or ink -- MK or PK) designations in the names.

Note that in my 1400-mis QTR folder that I recently posted I have a lot of "utility" profiles such as "C-0-100" that simply prints a straight line curve using the Cyan position ink, whatever it is.

"BO" = "Black Only"

If you're looking at an ICC, the printer name should be the first thing you see -- e.g., "UT14." If you don't see "UT14," it's probably not for that inkset.

Hope this helps.

No need to apologize Paul. I hope someday to meet you. In my life I have met two different people that I would call 'a genius'. One at Yals Law School (one colleague said of him, " You bump into him in the library and he asks you, 'what are you working on,' you tell him and then he begins asking you complex questions about it, and after that, he tells you more about it than you had ever imagined."). The other was the great modern dancer Martha Graham.

I'd like someday to add a third!

Harry
