QTR and Epson 1290 with UT2 Eboni Black and Photo Black

QTR and Epson 1290 with UT2 Eboni Black and Photo Black

2011-05-12 by Mel

Below is a quote from Paul Roark's Information page.

"For glossy papers, there are two printing procedures that can be used. First, if Photoshop, Picture Window, or Photoshop Elements is used, image adjustment curves (or layers) are available that allow printing a number of popular glossy papers even though Eboni matte black ink is installed in the printer. I, personally, keep Eboni black ink in my 1280 and use the image adjustment curves to print on glossy paper. This makes the inkset extremely flexible and also usually results in better prints.

Second, Photo black ink ("PK") can be used. It must be used if the print is made with programs other than the image editors noted above. Recommended settings for PK ink are in the last section of this Readme file".

In the last para. he states that "PK" ink must be used with image editors other than those above. I use PW Pro (one of those above) and about to use QTR - QTR does not have separate curves for Eboni and Photo Black.

Does this mean I cannot use Eboni Black with QTR ?

You can use Eboni Black with QTR. QTR controls how each cartridge/ink head
will print. You can use it to control any ink that'll go through the
heads. Eboni is for printing on non-glossy paper, as it tends not to stick,
nor does it give great dmax when so used. PK is used as the darkest ink on
glossy papers. It can be used on matte papers, although it's dmax will not
match Eboni on such papers.

QTR supports the 1290 and UT2. The matte profiles that ship with QTR use Eboni. The glossy profiles that I looked at use the M ink, toned with the C position ink for the neutral glossy, to generate the glossy blacks.

Thanks for the information Peter. Presumably when we say "Glossy" we also mean "Luster".

Thank you Paul for the info., especially for confirming that it is the UT2 Eboni used for Matte papers in QTR.

Let me just try and get this clear - for Glossy papers do I use Photo Black in the Black position with a mixture of M and C position ink in the C position, or do I not use the Photo Black and instead use the M and C position inks in the Black position ?

Also what would be the proportions of the M and C ink ?

It's been a long time since I dealt with UT2, but my memory is that you can change carts and use PK in the black position, but you don't need to. The M position ink is a dark glossy carbon that will give a reasonable dmax, though not quite as good as a true PK. Most of the profiles use the M position ink for the glossy black -- with or without some of the C toner in it to cool it down.

I don't have the UT2 curves in the laptop I'm working from now, but the QTR profiles, if you use Curve Creator to check out their curves, you'll see that the warm ones use only M; the neutral one uses a mix of M and C. You can figure out from the QTR profiles what that ratio is.

Thanks Paul, that gives me something to get me started.
