Which Inkset is this

Which Inkset is this

2011-09-20 by Greg

Back in May I received an inkset from MIS. The order was for a UTFSN inkset to suit an Epson 2000P.

According to the data published on the site, there are only 4 inks in this set, fitted to the printer as C M C M Y.

But this set does have 6 different grays. As a quick test I used a cotton bud to put 6 swabs on some paper. Scanned and measured in Photoshop, the L values are:

UTFSN-K 28
  " C 40
  " M 38
  " Y 70
  " LC 52
  " LM 63

The photo black bottle is labelled UT-HEX-4-PK

Is this a UT-HEX, Eboni-6, UT2 or other inkset?

Cheers
Greg

I'm not sure what it is. The C and M measures are close enough to be the same. Swabbing is not all that accurate. The Lm andLc look too far apart, however.

Are the tones of all but the K the same?

Hi Paul,

No, the swabs are not all that good, but I did measure from the most dense sections of the swabs.

Its difficult for my unpractised eye to tell, but C & M look the same as each other, LC & LM are the same as each other, but slightly more blue than C & M.

You can see the RGB scan here

I will have to load some carts and print a calibration scan.

Do you have to flush the Claria inks from a 1400 before fitting the UTFS carts? Will an initial fill sequence be enough to flush out the Claria inks?

Cheers
Greg

That could be the right inkset. I'd go ahead and load the carts.

I doubt it. I've had Claria & Noritsu (same dyes) inks in the 1400 with MIS inks for some time. (The old time, e.g., 1280, dyes and HP dyes are a totally different matter. They are very incompatible with MIS inks.)

No. Do a couple cleanings and print Purge6 pages to be sure the colors are out of there. It takes very little high gamut color to affect the new inkset hues.

Hi Paul
Thanks for the reply. The C and M are the same ink. The LC and LM should be the same, but are slightly different. This could just be a change from batch to batch.

I have loaded the carts, flushed out the heads using the direct flush method, 2cc of Windex each. A couple of cleaning cycles and its looking ok.

I have scanned the separations at 70% limit here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/35706661@N08/6173979213/in/photostream/
Looking down at the 100% end of the separations, the inks seems to change away from neutral grey. It that how it is supposed to be?

The 21step linearised grey here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/35706661@N08/6173979471/in/photostream/
You can see the change in grey tone around 45/50/50%. The lighter Y takes over from there down. There are some odd colour shifts at the lighter ends which are not there on the original. I must re-profile the scanner.

I have an IT8 target with the 24 step greyscale at the bottom. Is that a linear scale? can I use that greyscale to make an icc?

Cheers

Epson Printers Purge cycles

2011-11-21 by Globe Trotteur

I have now an epson 2200 with refillable cartridges. I usually use it on week-ends but it looks like every time i turn it on, it goes through a clean cycle. I do not know if it is due to a cartridge chip being reset. When i used to havea R220 with a CIS, i do not recall having this behavior. So i do not know if only one cartridge is being cleaned or all of them.Is that a normal behavior? Thanks.Pierre
