Spyder 3 SR Extended Greys

Spyder 3 SR Extended Greys

2011-10-16 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I recently bought the Spyder3 Studio calibration kit - mainly because
of the extended greys target that is a colour management option.

I've just done my first proofs - with ABW, QTR and Extended Greys (ie
- the Epson colour driver) - the Extended Greys result is fantastic -
it's definitely the easiest way to get a dead neutral print from OEM inks.

The only drawback is the use of more colour inks with this workflow -
I'll do a fade test from the three workflows to see how much colour
shifts are an issue.

I've read that the colour driver has less dmax than the ABW driver,
but any impact on dmax wasn't obvious in my proofs - it was
overshadowed by the excellent neutrality.

Just thought I'd share this,
Richard

Thank you Richard. I feel that the S3Print SR solution for B&W is very under appreciated, so I'm always glad when someone else sees its merit. Its also great for tints and cross tints, I hope you will try those functions as well. This list is mainly tinkerers, and this solution, while offering lots of options, is not really a hardware tinkering tool, more of a software tinkering tool, so it does not suit many on the list. That might explain why you haven't heard more about it.

I've had good success with this method, as well.

After tinkering with ABW for a long time, I adopted this method with
excellent success. With regards to the amount of color ink used -
even ABW squirts more color than purists like.

Hi Dana,
Although it's early days for me with the Extended Grey profiles, one good thing that I've found about using the colour driver and Extended Grey profile is that, even if one ends up doing the final exhibition print with QTR or ABW, one can achieve a guaranteed neutral grey proof by using the Extended Grey profile, which is then a benchmark against which one can compare the hue of proofs done with such as ABW or QTR.
