Claria "Grayscale" v. QTR Half Color, Half Black profile
2011-12-29 by Paul
In trying various "Advanced B&W" types of K + color profiles for the 1400 with Claria inks, I've concluded one that uses half color inks for the midtones and highlights and half black for these areas is the most color I'd want to use. So, I've made a couple of "Half Color" QTR profiles. It's a reasonable combination of smoothness and color stability. Obviously the less color the better, so I mix this down with black only (neutralized with LM) profile as needed. The 1400 driver has a "grayscale" profile, but it's not something I'd use. The URL below looks at the Lab A and B distribution for the Epson 1400 "grayscale" mode v. the QTR "Half Color" profile. http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/1400-Grayscale-RR-Metallic.jpg The above was on the Red River metallic paper, so one might expect better performance on an Epson paper. Below is a graph that shows the tonal distributions for Epson Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper. (It includes the tonal drift during the first 24 hours, which is when the largest shift occurs.) http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/EpsDrvr-UPGPP-24hr.jpg Paul www.PaulRoark.com
