Adobe Releases Lightroom 4 Public Beta For Free Download

Adobe Releases Lightroom 4 Public Beta For Free Download

2012-01-10 by Shoshanna Moser

Attention Lightroom users! Adobe has just announced the release of the
Lightroom 4 public beta, a free download available for both Windows and
Mac.

The final, commercial version will be hitting the shelves in two or
three months, but this late-beta will allow Lightroom fans-- and those
who've been considering adding this extremely useful software to their
photo editing toolbox-- an opportunity to preview and explore the
advances, improvements, and innovations of the latest edition.

Further information, and a link to the downloads, can be found on the
Adobe site at
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/201201/01102012AdobeLightroomBeta.html

Best wishes,

Actually, what I'd prefer is incorporation of the Lightroom search capabilities into Photoshop. I don't need two large, overlapping and not very well integrated programs.

Hey Paul,
That's a really good request.. A few of us have been trying to beat Adobe up for the past couple of years to get this concept added.. From what they tell me it's really a complex issue as it goes well past just Lightroom and Photoshop.. If they really stepped up it would encompass the full suite of programs.. not just Photoshop and Lightroom. They are actually looking at doing it but stepping back it's just asset management but needs to deal with all assets not just our images.. So all file types that get handled by the suite need to be involved..

Anyway for what I think your after their is a work around sort of ..I do a few things using Lightroom that seem to work reasonably well.. It's just being a little creative that's all.. So here's kind of what I do.. It's not perfect but it's very workable.. Ok I shoot a lot of digital images.. So that all works as expected in Lightroom. I just make my file system / catalogue system work by structuring it properly.. Ok now here's the rest.. I have a couple of drum scanners and that we do scans on.. all of this stuff has a structured file system to sort it out.. I also have Photoshop files.. literally thousands of them that I have structured in a files system which includes a raft of clients my own work you name it.. ... All of this stuff I import into lightroom into a separate catalogue.. I hope I'm saying this so you get it.. Like I said not perfect but it works..It's a visual and searchable system in Lightroom that lets me both see and open any image I have.. They are stored all over the place in various places.. So my cataloging system is kinda pushing Lightroom but it does work ok now... In earlier versions Lightroom would choke.. but as of Version 3 the data base capabilities are way improved.. But you still have to back up back up back up... I have Cumulus and it's pretty slick but doing Lightroom the way I do it is far easier and way less effort then what I had to do with Cumulus.. So in summary what I think you'd like to do you can do and you'd be surprised how well it works.. but you'll need to do it with Lightroom.. The key to creativity with Lightroom is to realize that it's capabilities go well beyond importing images from your digital camera.. The images can come from anywhere and be of any type..
Try an experiment or too...I got a nickel says you'll be surprised.. Anyway asset management in Lightroom work reasonably well for images across several pieces of software and disciplines.. I'm getting fairly comfortable with it now... Play with it and let me know what you think ok?

Dunno, but I use Lightroom to manage my pictures, and launch PS with the picture I want to mod from within Lightroom.

Any changes in the pictures are also saved back into Lightroom. Used bridge in the early days, it's now cocooned.

I don't use bridge anymore either.. I use Lightroom but constructively it's not an editing program like Photoshop..They have added a lot of features to it along the way and maybe that what is confusing many folks.. Walker is excited I think about soft proofing being added...I have never printed directly from Lightroom.. My bad I guess. I have never tried to have Lightroom be an answer all.. for me it is what I'll call the clearing house.. I can rough edit a shoot of several hundred images very quickly.. including minor adjustments and weeding.. Any can be quickly opened in Photoshop as needed but I typically don't do that when I'm editing unless I have a pretty exciting image. I guess Pauls request makes sense but I'm not sure I'd want to look at all the Lightroom stuff in Photoshop.... I typically focus on taking an image home in Photoshop.. I never really looked at Lightroom for that.. When I first started with Lightroom I hated the catalogue system..It made me nuts.. I was used Cumulus back then.. But Cumulus is a ton of work if you do it correctly.. admittedly it does a good job.. The default structure in Light room is a bit shallow for real organization but if we design how we want it to look and name folders properly then it's a real improvement.. for me very workable..I use a structured set up in Photoshop also for images and found that I just import them into a seperate catalogue in Lightroom to visually manage all my Photoshop files...way kool..
Anyway I've found my nitch using Lightroom.. but it's understandably not for everyone.. if we can't get comfortable with the interface or using it then it's best to just move on .. Life its too short. We need something that works for us.. Their are several other ways to skin the cat.

I have 26,000 drum scans that I manage. LR works really well for that and also for tagging print-templates / setups to client files. While I print from any software that works for the image I'm working on, LR has always had the potential to replace them in the long run. Soft Proof is a crucial step in order to quickly determine gamut issues when printing from LR.
