We can only wait and see how the loss of independence plays itself out.

It *appears* that Nik Software was economically viable before it began marketing Snap, so Google has *some* incentive to maintain or even expand those non-Snap products, or at the very least entertain a buyout of these other products. Nik has a good reputation and great brand recognition. Google should be smart enough not to waste those things just to acquire Snap.

My fingers are crossed.

I dearly hope that there will be a NikonScan update or a new version incorporating drivers for Mac OS X Lion and later. I've got a CoolScan5000 that need an old Mac to be still useful.

Hoping!

The answer is Vuescan from www.hamrick.com if you can find some way to
physically connect the scanner. Once you get used to its flight deck it's
vastly better than NS ever was.

Ed fixed SCSI timing issues (via Vuescan) that caused artifacts in NS, for
which Nikon were happily charging a fortune for a pointless scanner rebuild...

Thanks Mr.Sleep
Actually, I'm trying to figure out Vuescan on my iMac, with the scanner plugged-in (this is a standard USB plug).

I have some problem with all the possibilities (I'm finding the menus system a bit awkward!), I'm stuck with a lot of grain in the scans and I have a preview problem since the scan is very different. My first good thing is that the software is much faster than Nikon's.

For the price, I think that I should try to explore in depth all the menus and see if I can use my SF200 accessory (batch scanning).

Thanks for the input

If the scanner is scanning, it's going to work. You probably just need to
work through each screen of menus, one item at a time, using the advanced
interface. Reading the manual may be necessary, some of VS settings and
methods are a bit obscure :) A lot of things don't normally need changing
from defaults. Obvious things to check, bit depth and scanning resolution
set to the optical res of the scanner. The scan should exactly match the
preview when all is good.

Once you have that figured out, save the configuration file. I use VS with
a couple of different scanners and for various neg/pos types, and have a
selection of configs saved that make it easy to swap around.

I believe (from memory, haven't checked) that the SF200 is supported, but
as with NS, the exposure etc used for the first scan is applied to the
following slides in the batch.

I have been a long time user of Vue scan too. It doe shave a clunky
interface but it does work. There is a book for it too. I was successful
in getting the Nikon Scan to work on Win 7 64 bit with a patch. I forget if
there was any Mac based patch or not. Probably not.

Where did you get the patch for Win7 64-bit? I have the Coolscan 2000 and I thought that I understood that Nikon Scan will not work on 64-bit machines, period. Even tried to run the Prof. version in XP mode, but no luck because 64-bit.

Was planning to purchase Vuescan, but I use the scanner so infrequently these days if there is a free option, I would take it.

Thanks

I'd also add I have been running it like this for at least two years. Quite
happy, but I do use Vue Scan, Nikon, Silver Fast, Epson Scan. Each has a
