Newbie on printing! How to get started?

Newbie on printing! How to get started?

2012-12-18 by mattalves

Hello all!

So, I've been a B/W photo junkie since college years (those a not so short while ago) and decided to get started on printing my own stuff - got a cheap Epson R2400 with the standard cartridges.

Any tips or directions to resources about how to start on it? I've already installed QuadTone since that appears to be a must and that's pretty much everything I know about the deal :)

Thanks a bunch!

Mat

Mat,
You might enjoy reading Clayton Jones' article about using the Epson ABW feature to make B&W prints. It is article 9 on this page:
http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm
There are lots of other digital B&W options, but since you've installed the standard Epson carts the ABW process would be an easy starting point.

Thanks Mike, the link is absolutely brilliant! Will give ABW a shot, first
of all.

Any advices on which direction I should move on after that? Would going CIS
be an overkill move as of now, since I'm still in the learning stages?

And one more thing, any recommended resources for third party inks? :)

Thanks once again for the help, really appreciate it!

Mat

Hi Mat,

Sources for alternate inks and empty refillable carts and pre-filled carts are:

inkjetmall.com particularly for the piezography inks

inksupply.com for a very wide range of B&W alternate inks

I also suggest that you look at Paul Roark's web site (http://www.paulroark.com) and particularly his articles on B&W inks. Especially look at his carbon 6, which you can mix yourself from ink supply.com's ebony matt black ink. Paul uses it on Arches watercolor papers.

I think that the carts for the 3800/3880 have enough capacity that a CIS isn't really needed, but that's just my opinion.
