Re:1430 and ink and Topping off Cartridges

Since I'm pretty new with all that "kitchen work", I'll copy part of your workflow. One question arise, pardon me if it's really basic, but having a set of full cartridges waiting for a change, is there any danger, that at the bottom of the cartridge, ink will dry and finally clog the printer? ***************************************** Good question You can find caps for your cartridges I bought mine at www.rjettek.com but you could find them at many ink sources they are really inexpensive so get more than you think you will need. I cut a ziplock freezer bag into 1 inch squares and place these on the outlet then seat the cap I have never had this leak and have done hundreds of refills. For the printers where I have had extra cartridges HP's and the Canon 9000 I keep extra filled cartridges in a zip lock bag for each color and each cartridge has a number on the side so I replace in order and never let one sit over one cycle. I also recap and put the used cartridges in the same bag. For those cartridges I remove and store I do the same but put a bit of damp tissue in the bag with the cartridges. I have one printer that sits unused for 5 to 7 months a year and this is its 6th year and I expect when I set it back up it will work fine. I store it with cartridges filled with distilled water and glycol and put it in a trash bag for the winter. My winter weather is normally humid so I do not put any moist tissue in the trash bag but I believe some in very arid desert enviornments do put water in with the printer some use sponges. ********************************** Topping off cartridges. While this was possible with some older technology I did this with two older HP Printers where I never removed the cartridges just opened and filled. The newer printers are often user unfriendly in order to force users to buy $15 ink cartridges. Frequent software and firmware updates to some printers have made older cartridges obsolite to discourage refilling and resetting. While the OEM TO79's work in either printer I believe the older 1400 ARCS will not function in the 1430 but I am not sure that this is a fact. I have ARC Cartridges for several printers but with the exception of the 1430 I only use them as cleaning cartridges. I have had problems with them not reporting empty and having the printer waste a sheet of photo paper. I had to count sheets and check ink levels frequently and the only way on the 1430 is to pull the cartridge out enough to see the ink level. I have found having multiple cartridges for each position and using a chip resetter to be the best method for my use at this time. I understand that some ARC Cartridges can be manually reset but these are usually expensive sets and might not be available for the 1430. As far as I am concerned there is not a good option for the 1430 for B&W at this time but there are ways to ge the job doneI hope to find sets of empy OEM cartridges on Ebay and find a reseller that can sell me empty cartridges so I can put OEM Chips on Empty Cartridges so I can use a chip resetter and the OEM Chips will report when empty correctly. From what I have seen the chips on the nonOEM cartridges seen on Ebay are not reprogramable so can not be reset. Bill Lewis
