Color Curves Question

I developed another color curve for the UT14 ink set that prints a nice warm tone on gloss or satin surfaced papers. The ramp is good and there are no surface issues. My standard practice when working with an image has been to merge all visible layers and then apply the curve to the new layer before printing. However, this resulted in bad prints too dark and major surface issues. The cure turned out to be to flatten the image before applying the curve it then prints with the expected results. I noticed that when I apply the curve to the merged layer, the image becomes purple and black. When I apply the curve to the flattened image, the image becomes purple and blue, which is what I expect from the curve. Any ideas of why I get this difference?
