Need help taking the plunge on a 9890

Need help taking the plunge on a 9890

2013-03-25 by chen.benedict

Hello.

I am really keen on getting a 9890 to do eboni prints.

but am having second thought or at least moving to getting it closer to the end of the year.

Some advice would be good.

on my situation:

I'm in Singapore. I document my country land and people. been doing it 4 years now. I got a job and try to make pictures as much as I can.

I don't do a lot of prints only when i reach a lull stage or need to do review of pictures.

So the 9890 would go without use for months. (I will put clear-base in when the machine is not in use)* would this be advisable?

I would make maybe 20-30 prints 1 year. mostly 20 by 30 and a few 40 by 60.

I want the final control of my print Eboni warmth on RR Aurora really got to me.

To me that sounds like a very expensive proposition to make 0nly 30 or so prints per year.. Plus the cost to decommision and recommision the printer as time moved forward.. lastly the depreciation on the printer even though it was used little would end up on the books really affecting what it cost you to make prints .. I don't know if you have any printmakers over there but I think it might make sense to figure out how or what you'd have to do to out source the prints.. step back and compare the costs and benefits of going that way versus what your looking at now....... just a thought..

Recently I've been agitating and running my 7800 every 2 weeks when not in
use. I agitate the carts the night before turning on the printer. So far,
that routine has resulted in perfect nozzle checks and consistency. The
time needed to do this is minimal.

I agree with Jimbo, in principle, but so far there do not seem to be enough
people in most areas to coordinate such an approach. I suspect, like me,
most who use wide format printers for Eboni buy them used. If the cost of
the printer is not a major issue, the convenience of having your own setup
may outweigh the time (and for me space) issues.

Back the the issue of potential clogging, the 9890 has switchable K inks.
The dilute Eboni inks almost never clog. When I was allowing my 7800 to
sit for long periods, it was always only the Eboni that had a problem.
With the 9890, you could just leave a clear fluid in the PK position.
Then, when you were going to leave the printer for a while, if you printed
a small black test print with glossy paper selected in the Epson driver,
that would, I think, blow the Eboni out of the nozzles. This might avoid
the main cause of clogs.

Agitating the carts is easy. So far, I have had no issues with the valves
leaking. It may be that you'd want to do a power clean to clear the lines
after the printer sat for a long time. My printer often asks me if I want
to do this after it has sat idle for a while. (Epson inks also settle, but
most at a lower rate.) I don't do power cleans, and the movement of the
lines and dampers seems to take care of any problems that might occur, at
least for the periods of time that I leave the printer.

Good luck with your project.
