anyone using 3MK in a 1400 or 1430?

anyone using 3MK in a 1400 or 1430?

2013-04-20 by Paul

My R1800 is suffering from perhaps a terminal illness and I may need a new printer. I use Paul's 3MK setup and have been very happy with it. He tells me I can continue that configuration with a 1400 or 1430. I'd like to hear from anyone out there doing this, and what your experiences have been. His preferred setup is the Eboni-6 which apparently gives excellent results but I'm not ready for a more complicated and perhaps more expensive route, with different dilutions of Eboni. Carbon-6 is another viable setup, less expensive, but I'm not eager to "mix my own"!

It seems there's only six, not eight, cartridge positions in the 1400/1430. There's only one black position whereas the R1800 has two plus GLOP. Are you using QuadTone RIP? Which channels do you have set aside for the three black positions? Did you have to write new profiles for the paper you use?

And earlier on, I recall Paul saying the 1400 worked very well with even one black cartridge, even better than the R1800 with three blacks. I guess in that setup you could use the Epson driver in its Black Only mode, assuming the driver has that option.

Please share your setups and opinions! Thank you,

Paul

Paul,

Download http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/1400-3MK-Eb4.zip and you'll see
how I set up the 1400 with the 3MK arrangement. There are a number of
profiles that have been linearized for the 1400 in the Zip file. While the
1400 was better as a single BO than the 1800, it might still show some
banding. It you do want to try a single BO, go with the QTR approach to
that. I don't think the Epson driver gives a true black only.

I'll check that out, thanks.

Paul (W),
I have just gone through a matching experience to yours, I think.
The 1800/3Mk ended up in pieces and in the bin.
I now have a 1430/1500 running with the 3MK set-up as Paul(R) advocates. The refilling and re-setting of the carts is not quite so straightforward as with the 1800, but not a serious problem (It was explored in a recent thread )
Print quality with the profiles Paul posted is as good as ever, and indistinguishable from those with the 1800.
The option to experiment with Paul's Eb6 & other set-ups as also there if you have a mind to try them.
Chris.

Thanks, Chris, that's just the sort of response I was hoping for.

Could you elaborate a bit? Which channels did you load your black in? Did you fill the unused channels cartridges with a cleaning fluid of some kind? Did you have to write any QTRIP profiles? What paper do you use? What's different about refilling re-setting the carts (are they auto-reset)?

Questions, questions! Looks like you might be in the UK. Isn't the 1430 called the 1500 there?

Thanks very much,

Paul

Re: [Digital BW] anyone using 3MK in a 1400 or 1430?

Paul,
I put the MK in the K,C &M positions, and because I was out of MIS cleaning fluid, put some bulk ink from InkSpecialist.com in the Lc,LM, &Y positions. This meant the set of carts that came with the printer are un-used.
I am using re-fillable carts bought here in the uk, wich seem to be the same as the MIS ones. They are so called Auto Reset, but dont reset until showing almost empty. Not quite so good as using a chip resetter as I did with the 1800, which meant that all could be reset together. With these ones it seems that they have to be done as the y run out, one at a time. So far I've not had to refil enough times to really get that worked out in the best way.
At this stage I have not written any new profiles , although I have done so in the past, and am printing on Hahnemuhle Cotton Rag with Paul's 3MK-PA325 profile.Same profile works well with Permajet Delta Mat FB which is slightly more neutral in tone.
Yes I am in the UK in Devon. It takes me a month to get inks etc over from the US, and paper choices are different. I have also used Innova Cotton High White .
Yes the 1430 is the 1500W here.
Hope this helps.
Chris

Re: [Digital BW] anyone using 3MK in a 1400 or 1430?

2013-04-23 by Paul

Thanks for the informative answer, Chris.

You mentioned being out of MIS Cleaning Fluid. That's what I've been using... I have it in the five color positions on the R1800. Strangely, the last few weeks those carts show spotty patterns in the nozzle check whereas the three black carts' patterns are fine. I'm more and more suspicious of that cleaning fluid, so I'm going to give my R1800 one more try before I pitch it. Paul Roark suggests the base fluid he uses in his Eboni-6 approach, consisting of distilled water, glycerin, Kodak Photo-Flo, and Edwal LFN.

I do find the chip resetter very handy, I might miss that convenience.

Digital printing technology flows across the Atlantic East to West as well. I use the OctoInkjet waste ink tank, from your country. Works great, very well engineered.

Cheers,

Paul
