Large size sheet paper

Large size sheet paper

2013-11-07 by <roark.paul@...>

I must say, I do not like working with matte fine art paper that is in rolls. For large panoramas there is no choice, but for 22 x 28 inch images, it's a hassle at best. Sheet paper is much easier. However, I find very little out there that is 24 by 30 (or 36) inches.

I'm going to go back to using my old standard PremierArt 325, which I can still get in large sizes (see http://www.ultrafineonline.com/pr325gmshw2s8.html ), but if there are other smooth, non-OBA inkjet papers out there, I'd sure like to know.

I'll be experimenting with German Etching today. And, of course, Arches is there, but it's only 22 inches wide, the dmax is less, and the print will not have the smoothness of a good hot press type inkjet paper.

I do have a D-roller, but I am not that impressed with the job it does. I've also tried any number of other ways to "relax" the roll paper after printing. All seem to have their drawbacks.

What I'd really like is 24" x 30" (or 36") Epson Hot Press Natural, but it does not appear to be made.

All suggestions will be appreciated.

I use an old seal dry mounting press that heats up the curled paper cut from a roll and about 15 sec. at about 185 gets really flat and smooth. will even smooth out any dings in the paper. works well with just about any media. If cut sheet is larger than press just press it in increments. will flatten the whole sheet.

I've used that method with Arches. The internal gelatin sizing probably helps with that paper.

Do you find any increase in coating popping off or other defects? (One of my latest failed experiments turned one of my very dark plain skies into a strarry night scene.)

actuallly I often press after paper has been printed, either Vivera, Conecolor, K7 inksets and find the heat actually helps cure the ink never had any coating popping. I use a kraft cover sheet never seen any inperfections after press that wasn't there before pressing. Papers used include HPRB, Cone type 5, Hann. Bamboo, Hann. William Turner, Cone type 2, Premier micro porious , Lexjet Archival Matte, CAnson Photo baryta.

Canson Rag Photographique is similar (smooth matte no OBA) and is in large sizes:

Thank you, I'll test the Canson papers with Eboni-6.

With Eboni-6 on Canson Rag, I obtain a L* min value around 17.5, not as good as Epson HPN. The deep blacks are perfectly homogeneous. Its texture is very close to the Hahnemuhle Ultrasmooth.

Make it 70x100 or 72x102 cm (28"x40"). For a mix of 44", 17" and 13"
printers it can be cut in nice sizes without much paper waste. Take into
account the trailing edge in the printer that needs some extra margin.
In offset papers it is a common format as 80% of jobs fall within that
size. Of course quite large for most amateurs to store but it can still
be handled easily before and after printing. I used to order smaller
offset sheets for mock-up prints but this size has been more economic.
The rest is done on rolls here.
