Putting out the foveon fires....

2002-03-20 by antonisphoto

Folks,

I am posting this on list, (a) to let you know I am following all this, (b) to offer
some suggestions, and (c) to say that I cannot in good faith engage in real
censorship "from above" on these matters.

I am always dismayed that these kinds of avalanches happen on the list. I
have also decided that this is the nature of the beast, not the end of "quality"
as we know it on this list. It's the nature of both of our human nature and of the
delivery system: someone gets an annoying digest full of off topic threads, or
comes to the home page to find dozens of messages instead of one title
thread that can be easily ignored if desired.

The best suggestion I can offer is that when things stray, please respond off
list. The next best suggestion is to pay attention to your written "tone of voice"
because in writing it has far more impact, especially when we don't see each
other face-to-face. It is easy to write things we wouldn't dare say to someone
in person. A little like road rage or flipping someone as we speed away
protected by our vehicle.

I value Austin's presence here, and he is entitled to offer an educated opinion
on matters of his expertise. For that matter, so is everyone else. And we are all
entitled to disagree. But by writing with "flames ON" all we are doing is
waisting bandwidth - to put it in appropriate lingo. So, please, a bit of
self-restraint. Much as the list has two "moderators", we can only beg for
moderation from your end in these circumstances.

Regarding the origins of the Foveon thread: It is indeed off topic, since we are
not really a list on image capture. And sice it's difficult for moderators to be
"thread police" here, when these topics pop up, as long as they die down
quickly, it's not worth making a big fuss over them. Nevertheless, the best
remedy, is to not respond to OT posts on-list or to start an on-topic thread.
Besides, an off topic post will not serve the person posting it as well as it
would if it went to the appropriate list.

My "moderate" two cents....
