osX ps7 and background printing

osX ps7 and background printing

2002-03-25 by soprisghile

Thanks to visionaries at our little company, we are getting a new,
faster-than-God G4. I am a PC person with not much mac experience.
Is it true that the Piezo driver ties up Photoshop for the duration
of its export? Will this be the case with DP aware Pshop 7 running
under osX? Or, should I keep my XP box as a print server...?
Thanks,
Dennis Craven

I don't think they've yet released a version of the piezo driver for
OSX, so it's difficult to say yet.

However, other forms of OSX-native printing have very little impact on
system performance. (Whereas "classic" printing can tie up my system
occasionally.) So odds are good that once there's a native version of
the piezo driver, performance should be pretty decent.

(I _love_ OSX :) )

Dennis, when I print with the piezo driver, I can click on the desktop
(or anything visible in the background and not part of the PS app) and
that puts PS and the printing process in "background" operation. It may
take a few moments for the click to activate, and the activities away
from PS are sluggish, but this works fine for downloading email at the
usual speed and for reading messages.

That said, using your XP box for a print server has its advantages, or
course. For instance, after working on an image in PS, you could
transfer it to XP box for printing, and return to the Mac to work on
another image while the first image is coming out of the printer --
which can take up to an hour and a half.
