You don't need them.  The ink from the new cart will flush out the old ink.
As long as the old ink is Epson compatible (not Lyson), you're OK.

MIS thinks the 1270 is important for quads.  It's apparently readily
available and most want to have their color inks in the newer printer -- the
1280.

Since MIS is sending me an old 870, I'll be working on a compatible machine
soon.  So, if you are patient, there should be some alternatives for that
machine soon.

"Readily available" is an undertstatement...  Given all the problems 
with the OEM inks, there are lots of refurbs and  new unsold units to be 
had..

I got a refurb for $279... Can't touch an 1160 for that price..
