Imageprint 4 Information

Imageprint 4 Information

2002-04-06 by Robert Morrison

This is cross posted on the archival color list:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/archivalcolor

Just received this hot off the press information on ImagePrint 4 from John
Pannozzo, the President of Colorbyte. We had a long conversation last week
discussing his product and its potential to contribute to both the quad
printing market as well as for supporting 3rd party color inkjet printing.
The short version is that ImagePrint 4 is available for both Windows and the
Mac, although I get the impression that the mac product is still in its
final stages of tweaking. The mac product is currently a "classic"
application, however, he was hoping to have a native product out this
summer. It supports layout of images, multiple profiles during a single job
and apparently has a dither pattern that is better than the Epson drivers.
As it stands ImagePrint currently supports the following Quad ink sets:
Lyson Quad Black, Cone Piezography, and MIS Full Spectrum and VM ink sets
for the Epson 1270, 1280, 1290, 7000 and 9000 series printers and also
supports Epson OEM inks for color applications. When I spoke with him last
week he suggested that work was still in progress for the MIS VM inks...but
this communication certainly suggests that they are ready. Perhaps the most
interesting quad capability is for MIS VM...where you will not have to use
Paul's Curves. Instead you will simply edit your file in grayscale and then
use a slider in Imageprint to determine what tonality you want for the
print. The system is supposed to work with either the Traditional VM set or
the Sepia set...just as Paul's curves do. I believe that the 7000 and 9000
products are farther along than the desktop versions of the software...but
John suggested that the mac 1270 version (which is the last to be completed)
would be final in about another 2-3 weeks.

Perhaps the most disappointing news was that only Epson OEM inks are
supported at this time in the color arena. Unlike some other RIPS,
Imageprint does not give you control over ink flow. However, colorbyte
(like Epson or Cone in Piezo) has control over ink delivery. They have
optimized this for the ink sets that they support. They can, in principle
do this for other 3rd party color ink sets (like Gen4, Indelibles, MIS
perpetuals) but they have not done this at this point. When speaking with
John, I stressed that this would be an enormous help, particularly with the
Indelibles and MIS Perpetuals, where the Epson settings do not work well...
particularly for the black ink which is decidedly nonlinear above about 85%.
He sounded interested...and if I was a betting man...I'd say we will see
support for the MIS Perpetuals (which in my experience would also work for
the Indelibles) in the future. In order to support an ink set they get it
in house and actually run it in their printers. Once the ink is
linearized...thy can then build individual paper profiles using their
software from targets that customers print...I believe that this is what
Michael Kravit has recently done for the 7000 with the MIS FS inks.

So that said...here is the blurb directly from John...unedited...I don't
know anything more about this product than what I have said above. I think
Michael Kravit is currently our resident imageprint expert. John is also
very friendly...and you could contact him via phone or email for more
info...but he won't be participating directly on the list due to time
constraints.

ImagePrint has quickly become the standard for producing photographic
quality output from color inkjet printers. By popular demand, ColorByte
Software brings the same high standard of quality to Quadtone printing.

How did we do it? We started where we always do, by creating our own
proprietary profiler this time specifically for grayscale. Using a simple
monochromatic target we can profile paper and Quad Black ink set
combinations in an ICC workflow that allows accurate tone reproduction in
black and white printing. Because ImagePrint is compliant with ICC workflow,
you can print using the same working space as in PhotoShop. This ability to
³proof² through PhotoShop means that what you see on the screen is what
you¹ll get off of the printer. Finally we add a grayscale ICC setup feature
that works just like our color ICC setup. It allows users to imbed the
source profile in a single or multi-channel grayscale image or to use a
default source space created by ImagePrint.

Why choose ImagePrint for Quadtone Printing? Other software products on the
market limit you to one particular Quad Black ink set. ImagePrint gives you
the flexibility to use the ink set that's right for you. Best of all, if
your needs change and you decide to add color inks to your printing
environment you won¹t have to invest in another software package - you'll
already be using the industry¹s best! Photo-quality black and white prints
from your Quad Black inks PLUS the best color engine in the business.

The best quality black and white prints from the most popular Quad Black ink
sets and printer combinations on the market*. The question is why would you
use anything else?

* ImagePrint currently supports Lyson Quad Black, Cone Piezography, and
MIS Full Spectrum and VM ink sets for the Epson 1270, 1280, 1290, 7000 and
9000 series printers.

Depends on what printer you want it for and for how many printers. For a
desktop printer its about $500. For the 7000 and 9000...considerably more
but less than Cone's Piezo24 system.

Robert,

Can you use a single copy of ImagePrint 4 to run multiple printers on one
computer or do you have to buy as separate copy for each printer? I
understand that they use a parallel port dongle security system.

For the 7000 ImaPrint is roughly $1500 or there abouts. For the Epson 10000
w/ Postscript support it is over $2000.

Martin,

I did not see a response from Robert, so I will answer. Yes you can, but you
will need to purchase a second printer license. They are not expensivce for
the Desktop printers. I think they told me to add the 1280 to my 7000 RIP
woild be around $250.

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint 4 Information

2002-04-06 by Robert Morrison

John P, suggested that they were considering adding a second printer for
free to the Desktop (1270/1280) license. That way you could have one
machine running color and one running BW. From what I understand you can
run many printers from the same software...that's one of the advantages.
You just need a USB dongle for each printer.

Mike,

What are you running in the 1280? I'm really curious to know how Imageprint
output compares between the 1280 and the 7000. I think I'm about to go for
a 1270 imageprint setup...but is the 7000 really a lot better? I don't do
prints over 12" wide...so I don't need the 7000 for size...or
speed...but...well...quality?

That would be a step in the right direction since some of us have
1270's, 1280's, and 1160's. I wouldn't consider the RIP unless I
could run any of those for one price. They certainly have a right to
price it how they like, but I know I wouldn't use it as things stand
now. The other thing I don't like is dongle's. They tend to
screw things up. I taught digital imaging at a school a few years
ago where quark was licensed to the school using the European edition
and had to be dongled...we had many many problems with that
configuration. I am glad I don't have to hassle with that situation
anymore.

Just so you know, Imageprint doesn't support 1160's and there is no
plan...as far as I understand...to include them in the future.

Imageprint is licensed per printer. You need to buy an add-on license per
printer. If you want to run a colour and a B&W printers, you need one full
license plus one additional printer license, but there is no limit on the
number of users. This licensing model would work well in a service bureau
where you'd have multiple users going to one or two printers.

Robert,

I am not running IP4 on the 1280. I have MIS Archival inks in it right now.
The biggest problem I have with the 1280 is it is SLOW! Very slow. The
prints are lovely once they are done.

Mike-

How long does a print take to print? Say, an 8x10?

Andrew,

One important thing to remember is that the Imageprint 4 RIP has a number of
setting for printer quality.

8-Pass 1440dpi
4-Pass 1440dpi
2-Pass 1440dpi
4-Pass 720dpi
2-Pass 720dpi
1-Pass 720 dpi
4-Pass 720x360dpi
2-Pass 360dpi
1-Pass 360dpi
4-Pass 1440dpi BiDirectional
2-Pass 1400dpi BiDirectional
4-Pass 720dpi BiDirectional
2-Pass 720dpi BiDirectional
1-Pass 720dpi BiDirectional
4-Pass 720x360dpi BiDirectional
2-Pass 360dpi BiDirectional
1-Pass 360dpi BiDirectional

In the best mode 8-Pass 1440dpi an 8x10 print on 8-1/2x11" paper takes
exactly 9minutes 45seconds.

Robert -

I can not answer the question about 1280 vs. 7000 quality yet because my 7000 has not yet
arrived (expected any day now with the intention of running MIS FS inks w/ the IP RIP). I can
provide some preliminary information regarding ImagePrint and the 1280. I am running a 1280
w/ Generations 4 inks. My testing is still in the early stages but I've compared output from the
1280 using Epson, ImagePrint and the Cone driver (despite color ink, an interesting diagnostic).
Comparison is difficult because I'm using color inks for all and the IP RIP is not yet well profiled.
However, I would say that the Epson driver is hard to beat for detailed color work because of its
smoothness. With close examination, the dither pattern of the IP RIP and the Cone RIP are a
bit more obvious. I think the nature of the IP Rip will make it easier to get a high quality color
profile but I'm still undecided as to whether I'm going to build my color workflow around the
Epson driver or the IP driver. Large prints might favor the IP driver (color mgt over dither), small
prints might favor Epson. In addition, I'm using the IP on a Mac system and the IP Mac version
is pretty new. I am discussing the dither issue w/ them to determine whether my IP results show
the software at its best.

I expect this dither issue to be much less important for quadtone on the 7000. I can't answer
your comparison question directly but I would say that the 1280 is a pretty amazing printer.

Michael, I don't think the 1280 is that slow, but I've never had a
faster printer to compare it with. What printer can deliver its' quality
that is much faster? (Affordable, of course)!

Jerry,

I am not slamming the 1280, I have one and love it. But in comparison to my
7000 and especially the 10000 it is slow. However, the last part of your
message, the affordable part, is key. Probably none.

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint 4 Information

I knew it was too good to be true. I really don't have a need for the
larger printers. I'm gonna spring for that D60, and my Canon scanner
just died, so will have to get another right away.

Robert,

I don't know. I really hate dongles. They seem entirely unnecessary to me
and lead to all sorts of problems down the road as the software ages. The
fact that they use a dongle will probably take them off my list of things to
buy. There are less troublesome ways to copy protect their software.

Especially if they want to compete against the Piezo driver for the quads
where one copy of the software covers all of the printers and is cheaper.

What do mean that as the software age there will be a problem with the
dongle? I am using Imageprint4 and so far there has not been any difficulty
with the dongle - of course I don't use the parallel port for anything but
the dongle.

Martin,

The Piezography BW24 (Epson 7000/9000 version) of Cones software uses a
dongle.

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint 4 Information

2002-04-07 by Martin Wesley

Mike,

Well I guess that is off my buy list too then. <G>

Really all the dongle protection seems to be an approach for selling into
the prepress and service bureau market. If they want to sell to the desktop
market or individual photography they need to conform to the standards of
that market and dongles not at part of that scene.

Re: [Digital BW] Imageprint 4 Information

2002-04-08 by plindman1

Just noticed this update on the Colorbyte software website:

ImagePrint currently supports Lyson™ Quad Black, Cone
Piezography™, and MIS™ Full Spectrum and VM ink sets for the
Epson™ 1270, 1280, 1290, 7000 and 9000 series printers.

What I posted to start this thread was the same information which is now on
their web site...it was the "pre-release" version.

Print Drivers/Speed

2002-04-14 by Robert Morrison

I've been running comparisons of the Epson Driver vs. Piezo Driver (6.01)
today. Having been a Piezo user for 1.5 years, I'm very impressed with the
output from the epson driver using Jeff Randall's workflow, however the
Epson 1160 driver is half the speed of the piezo driver on my 1160's. I'm
wondering if the difference in speed is less of a problem on the 1270's?

Michael K., how does the epson driver compare in speed to Imageprint on the
7000? I remember you mentioned that there are many speed/quality settings
on Imageprint. Can you make a statement on speed for similar quality
output?
