I've had two responses thus far and I'll share my concerns if anyone can help. The hardware is an Ultra2 Saphir running Linocolor/Newcolor software hooked to a G4/500 with photoshop 6.0, GF2.0 and a piezo 1160 with cone inks. My concern has to do with the scanner settings and workspace definitions as well as the white and black point defaults in the scanner software. I get reasonable scans now and the PS histograms aren't bad but after reading the Cone piezo instructions, I wonder if my scanner is just not set for the proper dynamic range when it scans.

  Brian,

I don't know if I can help or not but first I wanted to see if you have the same
software. I have the Saphir Ultra running Lino Elite - whatever the latest
version is. If you have Elite, I can help, if not, I'll leave it to someone else.

However, it may be that your eventual questions are not so hardware/software
specific. If it's a question on workflow as it relates to bw scans, it _is_
appropriate for the list, so no need to discuss off-list.

Brian,

I have a Linoscan 1400 which I believe is identical to the Ultra 2
Saphir. I originally set it up under Windows 98 using the Newcolor
4000 software that came from it. I found the software very confusing
and had no idea of exactly what the scanner was doing.

I believe that Linocolor's Elite software is available for Mac users
with this scanner and I have heard that it is good. You might try to
see if you can get a copy of that.

The other thing to try is Vuescan. I am just starting with this
myself since I switched to Win 2000 and the Newcolor doesn't run
under that OS. Vuescan has gotten lots of favorable comments and a
trial version can be found for the Mac at:

Thanks! I've learned the Lino software to the point where I can operate it with some skills but am certainly not an expert. My real problem has to do with correcting the scan base densities using the lino software. I did read/play a bit more last night but am not making the progress I want.
