Print mounting.

Print mounting.

2002-04-14 by wilfred71118

I am about fed up with the warping that happens when dry mounting on
mount board. I was wondering if any one has been using a product
called Ultra Mount. I have seen a sample of this stuff. It looks like
it would be the answer to no warping using mount board and no dents
with foam core. It is tough and light. I am now searching for the
least expensive outlet for it. Anyone with any ideas?

I use a product from Bainbridge, called "Foamboard". I get no warpage at
all (below my perception level at least ;-)...

You probably shouldn't be mounting prints using dry mount. Use the
archival tape hinge method. Much safer, many less problems. And the
prints do lay flat, when matted. And no part of the print is attached
directly to the mount/backing board.

Conservators certainly prefer prints not to be dry mounted or in any
other way permanently bonded to anything.

However, I've never gotten a print to lie satisfactorily flat using
archival tape hinges, and the over-mat doesn't help any that I can
see.

Currently I'm just living with it. If I had room and money I'd
probably buy a press and go back to dry mounting, because the results
look so much better. And dry mount is known to be reasonably
well-behaved over time, too.

You shouldn't be getting warps. Put the board in the press to dry it out
before you mount on it. Lay the dry mounted print under a 18 x 24 or larger
piece of plate glass immediately after it comes out of the press. Check your
temp - it shouldn't be above 180-190 degrees. The self-adhesive stuff will
cost more and may be a nuisance to position the print on it. I don't know if
it is re-positionable.

David, possibly you are using too thin a paper and laying down the ink
too heavily. I have no problems at all with the prints not lying flat.
