MIS CIS system with a chipped cart and windows 2k or XP

MIS CIS system with a chipped cart and windows 2k or XP

I was wondering if anyone out there is using the above setup, and what
method you use to reset the chips. The equalizer program on the boot disk,
or the Qb7 resetter, or what? Do any of these methods work really well? Or
is it worth the extra $100 for the Niagra CIS with the non-writable chip?

Thanks

Hello ML

I think the answer (is it worth it for the chips) is almost certainly YES...
but your mileage may vary. There is not a lot simpler than switching off a
printer for a few seconds to reset ink levels... and if you buy a system
that requires software resets... and then find out you have problems running
it, what then?

Removing a CIS to reset a chip negates one of the best features of a good
CIS. It introduces air to the print head (thus wasting ink and time as you
try to clean it out) and can cause that cartridge to empty because as air
gets into the carts through the 'exit ports' the ink will be somwhat
inclined to drain backwards into the bottles. If you do it the other way
(lowering the carts immediately afetr removal to stop air ingress) you risk
ink running like crazy out of the carts as gravity takes hold... just as you
are trying to plug the exit ports. This example is a bit melodramatic, but
does demonstrate the possible problems with removing the CIS!

I have a hardware chip resetter that is handy for refilling some carts (by
the way, not all empty carts are provided with hardware resettable chips!)
This is useful for me personally, as I have been doing a number of tests of
Piezography BW and other inks on printers that are supposedly unsupported
(ie carts are not available pre-filled for them) - most recently the 890. In
that case, I nicked the chips off another old cart (Epson OEM), reset them,
placed them on the newly filled cart and was printing like a dream after
letting the filled carts settle.

Hope this helps your decision,

nij
