laminating archival prints?

laminating archival prints?

2002-05-07 by bjornaagedk

Hello List.

I have been experimenting with Piezo print at my epson 1160
and at the moment I am waiting for a set of MIS FS-N inks to
arrive.

My question goes on laminating.
Do some of you have experimented with laminating piezo-prints
?
We know that prints made with pigmented inks on acid free
100% cotton papers should last 'almost a lifetime', but what
happens if these prints are laminated?

I have a Sallmetall vacuum press and have experimented with
laminating piezo's with Printguard Satin. The result is beautiful
and the ink tone doesn't change, even if the print is heated
during the laminating process.

But I suppose a laminated print is not acid-free anymore??
So the laminate adds UV-protection and a nice glossy or matte
surface, but what about the durability?

We don't know. That adds another major variable to the equation (same
as with oversprays), and we're barely getting to the point where we
have some faint reason to believe that the paper plus ink combinations
may be decently stable. The research on oversprays and laminations
isn't being done (except a tiny bit by the people making the
add-ons).
