Patrick,

A while ago somebody posted a suggestion about using a couple of sheets
of that printable refrigerator magnet stuff to make a negative holder.
Cut two frames out of the magnet material and hinge them together
w/tape, and sandwich the neg in the middle. The magnets hold the neg
flat, so it doesn't sag, and the thickness of the magnet is enough to
lift it off the glass so you don't get newton rings. I've never tried
this myself, but it sounded like a good idea.

I've bought AN glass from the following website. Very
helpful with questions as well.

http://www.fpointinc.com/

I'm buying from here
http://www.fpointinc.com/cgi-local/web_store/web_store.cgi email them and
they recommend a 2mil sheet. I'm getting a 5x4 for about 38 usd. BTW great
service so far - emails returned, discussed and shipped within 2 hours!

Peter, BTW, in an earlier mail you said I should use the glass the right way
up... is it obvious which side to use??

Julian,
Not obvious, no, but maybe your eyes are better than
mine. Once I figured it out I marked the right side
with a piece of tape.

What do you look for to see which is the right side to go on the neg.
I need help with that.

Re: [Digital BW] Anti-Newton Glass

Julian,
Originally I didn't know that I couldn't use either side.
I lucked out the first couple of times I used it and got
good scans. Then, when I did get rings on a scan, I
figured out that only one side is coated (I _think_ it's
a coating). I tried both sides and found the side that
doesn't create Newton rings and marked it. It was a
trial and error process.
Maybe the supplier or someone else on the list
could provide a better method.

RE: [Digital BW] Anti-Newton Glass

Yes! But like you, I didn't notice at first which side was which. You can't
really tell by sight, but by touch. Rub a dry finger on each side, one side
is definitely rougher...

...and that is the side that needs to go on the film.

Another way I found is to have the lid (of the scanner) open with the lamp
on, place the AN glass on the Scanner glass - wrong way up - bucket loads of
shiny newton-rings cannily lit by the lamp. When it's right way up... no
bnasty rings to be seen.

Hope this is helpful,

nij

Sounds just like the Imacon method, but much more affordable!
