860 vs. 1160?

860 vs. 1160?

2002-05-16 by rich8155

Other than size (I believe 860 prints 9.5" wide vs. 1160 13") what
are the difference between the Epson 860 and 1160? Is the 860 the
same four-ink printing head? Also what is the largest size papepr
out there than can be printed with the 860? I am being offered an
860 but am looking for a 1160, in anyone's opinion is their any
downside to the 860 but size? Thanks for your opinions.

I bought an 860 recently because it was the cheapest printer that Piezo
cartridges were available for (at least as far as I could determine - I got
mine from an Ebay vendor who had new ones available for $145 delivered to
my door.) The same cartridges fit the 860 and 1160 (as well as several
other Epson printers.) The paper guide goes about 1 inch wider than 8.5,
but I'm afraid I don't know the longest paper it will take nor do I know
how large the printable area is (if narrow margins are a concern to you.)

Cheers,
Kip

I was told by Conetech that the 860 is letter size version of the 1160- same
printhead, same mechanics. Prints nicely.
I bought an 860 through a private vendor via amazon. Went to register it- no
serial number. Don't know if it's hot, edu, whatever. It was obviously not
used but had been sitting for some time. Lots of dust on the inside but no
ink splatters and the pads were all white. Ran some prints with epson carts;
one nozzle was clogged and several cleanings wouldn't clear it. Put a cis
on, more cleanings, windex on the pads, windex in paper towel in the
trough, no remedy. So, I thought, well I only paid $100 for this thing and I
blew about 8oz of rubbing alcohol through the magenta channel. It cleared
right up. Wonderful prints for a bit. Then another nozzle clogged. Repeated
the alcohol directly through the head procedure and it led to permanent, but
slight, banding which no amount of aligning will fix. No prob, I use it for
roughs. Well worth the $100.
If you bought yours with a warranty you shouldn't have the same experience.
I've had to send a 3000 and two 1280s back; rec'd replacements via UPS the
next day. Good luck,
Dennis Craven
