Promising News : Epson7600/9600

[This post from Royce Bair, on the Epson9000 list. Epson just
demoed the new printers for dealers. Sounds like the B/W
imagery is pretty promising. Royce has a good FAQ page on his
site; it's listed at the bottom. He's a dealer, but he's also known
to be very fair and objective. I know most of you print on 13x19,
but I'd assume that the bulk of this would apply to that new 2100,
or 2200, or whatever it's called. -MT]

(snip)

I just returned from Epson dealer training on the 7600/9600
printers. One of the interesting items we saw there were a
couple of B/W prints on Epson's new Somerset Velvet 505gsm
fine art paper. Talk about neutral. They were gorgeous! Both
were printed with the UltraChrome pigmented inkset, using all 7
inks.

We also saw a video click interview with Mac Holbert, master
printer for Nash Editions in Manhattan Beach. Holbert said that
his 9600 gave him "beautiful black and white right out of the box."
He felt the 9600 prints were "good enough to sell as B/W", and
that he had yet to meet a customer that was unhappy with the
B/W output of the 9600. (Keep in mind that the 7600's output is
identical to the 9600 -- just 24" wide, and $2000 less.)

So.....has the bottom just fallen out from the MIS/Cone/Lyson ink
market? After all, the new 2200/7600/9900 printers have that "light
black" ink. I hear the next series of Epson will add a "dark white"
ink as well to get better highlight tonal range. ;-)

Best regards,

I've heard several conflicting reports about this. I think that until one
of us who knows how to do quad printing actually gets to work with one of
these printers with our own images you simply can't draw any conclusions.
Test prints can be very, very misleading. I have no doubt, however, that
these machines are going to be a great (although very expensive with respect
to ink) color option.

It may mean that they have more trouble attracting new customers. If
they have little to offer over the standard printer/ink combination -
then why not stay with the standard? I'm in the market for a printer
but haven't done anything yet, waiting till the 2200 is out with some
miles on it. If it had not been for the "promise" of this technology, I
would have surely gone the MIS/Cone/Lyson route.
