Hi all, I've been playing with some AN glass from Focal Point Ind. I got a
2mm sheet of 4x5 custom cut part no. STK-MS45AN2 (38USD) for my 1680pro.
I've been using it with Vuescan with the manual focus point set at 0 and
with the textured side of the glass on facing the neg (th eneg is emulsion
down as always).
This stuff works. Centrally this is a marginal improvement but a big
improvement on the edges. No Newton rings as yet.

Re: [Digital BW] AN glass update.

2002-05-22 by Julian Thomas

OK, both of these taken from a 1600dpi 16bit scan of a 6x6cm neg. Changed
to 8 bit, 'View as Pixels',cropped to size, image size adjusted 600pixels at
dpi, save for the web in PS. This is from the extreme RH corner of the neg -
about as far away from the middle as i could get. I don't think there is
anything wrong with the methodology apart from the Image Size reduction, but
it is the same for both scans.

http://foundobjectsgallery.com/glass.jpg
Is from the AN glass and this
http://foundobjectsgallery.com/holder.jpg
is from the holder with the Auto focus position selected in Vuescan.

Now the question is, which focus setting will give you the best results
using this method?

I would try: 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, and 0.5

Care to run a quick test and let us know?

I went for -1! (see my last post) The vuescan setting have not relation to
the Epson settings. In silverfast e.g. you have a choice of 0 and 2.5 which
matches the details in the handbook.

I understand that.. BUT, it turns out that the defaults for the VueScan
settings on the 2450 were NOT originally 0.. In fact, they were
different for transparency and flatbed scans.. And some testing has
shown that varying settings in VueScan have produced different results..
one test showed that the actual "0" focal point was at 3/32 of an inch
above the flatbed glass..

Sorry hit send before I finished the sentence...
Anyway...
On the 1680 I did + and - steps in .2 increments and found that the full -
setting (-1) was correct. When you select 'transparency' in Vuescan it
selects a setting to allow for the holders, hence the different results.
I'll post the full set of strips if anyone is interested. If anyone gets a
sharper edge image than I posted, I'd like to hear from them!
