Epson 1680 Pro vs Microtek 9800XL?

Epson 1680 Pro vs Microtek 9800XL?

2002-06-19 by S. Colson

Folks,

Has anyone tried a neg scanning comparison between these two scanners, the
Epson 1680 Pro & Microtek 9800XL with TMA?

It would be informative to see how they each scan large format B&W film
such as 8x10". The Microtek will scan up to 11x15", the Epson 8x10".

The both are 48 bits, with FireWire, USB1.1,& SCSI-2 and comparably
priced.

Thanks, Stan

Hi Stan,

I've only used the Epson 1680 Pro and it scans large format
excellently. Out of curiosity I compared the Epson to my Howtek
4000 drumscanner - used a full density range 8x10 chrome -
which is denser then any b+w film.

The Epson did a great job - lost a little shadow detail compared
to the Howtek and not as sharp right out of the scanner but it
produced a scan that could be easily massaged in Photoshop.

If I did not have my Howtek the Epson 1680 would be the way I
would go. I was very impressed!

Hint! The Epson comes with Silverfast - learn how to use this
powerful scanning software to really get the most out of the
scanner. It also comes with an IT-8 transparency to profile the
scanner.

Best,

John V.
