I'm running a dual Athalon with 2gb ram, XP Pro. The default PS6 install
sets aside 50% ram for Photoshop use. I've changed it to 80%, and have no
problems using all of it.

There's several different manufacturers of chipsets for the Athalon CPU's.
Via, SIS, and AMD, among others. My board is using the AMD 760MPX chipset.
If your board has a Via chipset, installing the latest 4-in-1 drivers might
help. http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

Thanks Moreno, so it isn't specifically an Athlon problem. If you're
running a dual Athlon, I assume the board has the Athlon chipset. I
do wonder if that board handles the memory common with both
processors.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm using a board with an AMD chip, at least
the northbridge. I've got similar problems on a machine with a Via
chipset, though. I'll chase down other environmental problems.

I use dual intel with 2gb and PS 6 starts out with 1.6 gb available but when the file size grows above 1.032 gb the available memory changes to 1 gb. I brought this up on the PS forum and Chris Cox could not find an answer. He did not have a machine that he could duplicate it on. Look up the thread on that problem by looking for my name. The problem does not occur with PS 5.5 or 7 on my machine.

Thanks Robert, I'll read through that thread. It sounds similar, but
not quite the same problem. It is encouraging that you don't have the
problem in v7.
